Toxic Ties

Today there are a lot of trending words that are over used to the point we don't really know what these words mean or look like. One of these words is toxic. Often the word is used incorrectly to demonize someone that we don't like instead of understanding and being accountable for the role that we play in the chaos. To have a better grasp we have to define what is toxic, how it starts, the effects, and how we can overcome toxic behaviors.       What is toxic? Well the dictionary definition "is containing or being poisonous material especially when capable of causing death or serious debilitation"( Merriam Webster ). For something to be toxic it is either extremely negative in low doses or it is continuously negative in moderate doses. Tragic circumstances can arise and less than ideal things can be said and done. We all can display toxic or inappropriate behaviors at times; depending on the severity and the root cause is going to determine...

What is Amish Life like for a Woman

We are taught to see the world the way other groups want us to see it. However I am here to encourage us as black women to measure the world using our communities' ruler! One of our biggest responsibilities as black women is not only be an example for our children, our community, but to the world of women. After all we are the standard despite Western society feeding us that we are inferior, undervalued, and subjugated. The truth is the white women is the most oppressed woman there is and an example of that is within the Amish community. To understand why we are going to take a deep dive into their daily routines, religion and health, and their womanhood.   Daily Life       Well known things about the Amish community is that they work hard, are courteous to outsiders, and they stay to themselves. According to Amishvillage.com, "Amish, including the children, often wake up as early at 4:00 am to get started on their chores before dawn." ...

What the Heck is pH?

What do you know about pH? I know we all heard that eating your pineapple is supposed to make your vagina taste good. However balancing your pH is a little more than just cleaning your parts and eating pineapple. No worries though! I'm going to explain what pH is, what yours should be, and why it's important.   What in the HECK is pH??? "The term ‘pH’ stands for ‘potential of hydrogen,’ which is the measure of a solution’s hydrogen ion concentration." (theholistichealthapproach)  This means that in order for a substance to have a pH it has to have free hydrogen or hydroxyl ions. I know this is a little complicated because we are stepping into chemistry! But a simple rule is if it’s aqueous (contains water) it has a pH.  Common things we use in or on our bodies and whether or not they have pH:   Non- Aqueous/ no pH Aqueous/ pH Dry substances with pH* Butters/ oils Soaps/Cleansers Clay Sugars Toners Cocoa powder Salts Flowers/Plants Starc...

Inside of Us: Not Your Mama's Sex Talk!!

Have you ever wondered why we are always talking about embracing our bodies but, never  really  talk about our... well you know our vaginas.  Half of the time we don't even call it by its name because that's even awkward. I am here to make vagina conversations less of a taboo, perverted topic.  We are going to be exploring our female reproductive system on the physical to a much deeper level. However, first I would like to talk about the issue we have in our community about talking about our womanly health.  (Sarah Baartman and Henrietta Lack will be feature below. If you don't know who they are click the link on their name.)      It's not a secret that the black woman's body has been exploited for a while. Sarah Baartman's  " genitals [had been] in jars displayed at Paris's Museum of Man"  for over a hundred years(BBCnews). Then you have Henrietta Lacks who had cervical cancer and her cells    "...

Child Sex Crimes: the Cause that we don't Protest

We were always taught as kids to be aware of stranger danger, but did you that about 93 percent of children who are victims of sexual abuse know their abusers? (ywca.org). The sad thing is sexual abuse has gotten even worse and easier to hide with this whole pandemic thing.  I don't know about you, but this makes me sick to my stomach to thinking about it. We are going to talk about how it happens, the long term affects, and how get out of the "It's not my business" freeze. How Does Sexual Assault on Children Occur?     Child assault usually starts with the process called grooming: befriending and establishing an emotional connection with a child and sometimes the family, to lower the child's inhibitions with the objective of sexual abuse  (wiki.org). We have to be more aware of this happening to children that are mentally and/or  disabled. They are even more at a higher risk of sexual abuse.  Common tactics of grooming process gi...

Children the Free Human Capital in the Black Community

What is the first thing you think when you think of a child? Maybe innocent? Naive? Charming? What about about slave or an asset?  I am going to break down the dirty business of children being free human capital in the black community. We are going to be exploring the root cause, the negative effects, and solutions to this tragic problem.      It's nothing new for children to be used and abused. It happens all around the world. However, what's unique about it in the black community is we use them as disposable goods; we don't build children up to be productive human beings for our community. But why would we want to cause harm to such an innocent vulnerable creation of God? Well there are a couple of things that contributed to the problem but it started with integration.        The Destruction of the Black Community      In 1964 the Civil Rights Act made segregation "illegal". According to ncbi.org, many ver...
